They've been taught (and they've been rewarded) to think and feel one way politically and now can do no other -- even if thinking and acting on a very different politics would make themselves and the world better off. Their brains and emotions are like fossilized cement, and most of these folks are essentially lost to the world of facts, reason, and good sense.
