Imagine if a politician went to Nevada and told the people he'd never heard of Yucca Mountain. Imagine if a politician went to Tennessee and told the people he'd never heard of Oak Ridge and the Manhattan Project. Imagine if a politician went to Pennsylvania and New York who'd never heard of Three Mile Island or Love Canal. Or even imagine if a politician went to Illinois who'd never heard of Fermilab and Argonne National Laboratory. This is roughly the equivalent of going to the Pacific Northwest and telling the people that you've never heard of the Hanford site. And this is just what Barack Obama did this weekend. The Tri-City Herald weighs in on Obama's Hanford "gaffe" here, Hot Air points the episode as a great illustration of "the difference between hope and experience", Sound Politics headlines it's commentary, "I Voted For It, Before I Forgot What It Was", the environmental blog Grist points out that the Hanford site is "the focus of the nation's largest environmental cleanup" and guess what, they're not impressed with Obama.

A small side note. Among other things, the Hanford site is the home of one of America's premier alternative energy research labs administered by the U.S. Dept. of Energy. If you are a Senator running for President and you are putting yourself forward as someone deeply concerned about the U.S. government's alternative energy effort, but you've never heard of the Hanford research facility, this is fairly indicative of someone who is simply faking it, while being ignorant of the science and infrastructure behind of America's alternative energy future.
